Year 4

Welcome back to our final term in Year 4!

We hope you had a restful half-term break and are ready for the fun activities we have in store this term.

This term we will be revisiting our science topics from throughout the year and exploring some important and notable scientists linked to these topics. In English, we will be exploring ‘Tales Told in Tents’ and creating some poetry based on the beautiful imagery from these stories. We will be ‘thinking like Geographers’ through a self-led research project all about trade across the globe. In Maths, we learning about statistics, exploring geometry and embodying our inner ‘Mr Wolf’ when exploring time. In P.E., we will be tackling some Kwik Cricket and gymnastics. This term, we will continue to be joined by the wonderful Ms Knight to teach us some brass and woodwind instruments in Music, focusing on composition of pieces. We visit Computing again this term where we will be coding using Scratch. In R.E, we will be looking at ‘Dialogue and Encounter’ where we learn more about Saint Paul, Christian communities and exploring other world religions, this links nicely to our PSHE lessons which will focus on how we have been created to live in a community with others, relating to British Values.

Home Learning in Year 4

Home learning will continue to be set on Google classroom each week. Children will be given assignments in maths, spellings and reading comprehension with additional enrichment activities. Home learning will be set on Fridays on Google classroom and should be handed in the following Thursday on Google Classroom. If your child is unable to access Google Classroom, please let us know so that we can provide them with a paper copy or assist you with accessing Google Classroom.

Spellings

A list of spellings for each week will be given out after an initial spelling assessment has been undertaken. Your child will be tested in class on Friday with the words listed and new spellings will be set on Friday. We encourage children to learn spellings using a range of techniques like:

The Look, Cover, Write, Check method                   the pyramid method                   the rainbow method

LOOK at the word                                                                            t                                                              famous

COVER the word                                                                             th                                                            circle

WRITE the word                                                                            the                                                           earth

CHECK their spelling against the word.                                then                                                         various

Spellings will be available on Google Classroom. If your child is unable to access Google Classroom, please let us know so that we can provide them with a paper copy or assist you with accessing Google Classroom.

Reading

Your child will continue to bring home a reading book every day to share with you. 'Free Reading’ books may be chosen from the class library or from home. Please encourage your child to choose books that are a little challenging for them to read. Comics and easy books are also great to read as they can improve comprehension skills and give ideas for story writing, but they will not stretch their vocabulary and reading ability. Please encourage your child to read with expression, and to express opinions about the characters in the story, the plot, and what might happen next. Reading books and reading record should be brought to school each day.

Maths

All pupils have been given login details for Times Tables Rock Stars and Professor Assessor. The main aim for Numeracy home learning in the coming terms will be focusing on that quick recall of our times tables facts. The ‘Soundcheck’ option on TTRS is aimed to replicate the MTC. Numeracy homework assignments will be given for the children to complete on computers/tablets at home. Each child will get an assignment unique to them, to practise skills that have been taught in the numeracy lessons.

Water Bottles

Please ensure your child brings a named bottle to school every day, filled with water. The children are allowed to fill their water bottles up during the day if they run out. Please ensure water bottles are taken home regularly and washed.

Timetable of things to remember!

Please help your child to take responsibility themselves for the things that they need to remember.  Perhaps your child could cut out the timetable and place it somewhere at home or in their school bag to remind them each day.
