Year 4

Welcome to Term 1 in Year 4

We hope you have had an enjoyable and relaxing break!

This term we will be exploring The Georgians which will include looking at the Georgian novel, Frankenstein and the ‘twisted tale’ of Frankenstiltskin for English and comparing Pop Art with traditional Georgian portraits in Art! We will be investigating sound in Science, place value in Maths, and Latin as our foreign language. In R.E, we will be looking at our Mission alongside ‘Creation and Covenant’ where we learn more about Abraham and the connection between Abrahamic Religions. Our PSHE focuses on being ‘Created and Love by God’ which links to our E-Safety topic of self-image and identity.

Home Learning in Year 4

Home learning will continue to be set on Google classrooms each week. Children will be given assignments in maths (times table focus), spellings and reading with additional enrichment activities. Home learning will be set on Fridays on Google classrooms and should be handed in the following Thursday in person or on Google Classrooms. If your child is unable to access Google Classrooms, please let us know so that we can provide them with a paper copy or assist you with accessing Google Classrooms.

Spellings

A list of spellings for each week will be given out after an initial spelling assessment has been undertaken. Your child will be tested in class on Friday with the words listed and new spellings will be set on Friday. We encourage children to learn spellings using a range of techniques like:

Spellings will be available on Google Classroom. If your child is unable to access Google Classroom, please let us know so that we can provide them with a paper copy or assist you with accessing Google Classroom.

Reading

Your child will continue to bring home a reading book every day to share with you. 'Free Reading’ books may be chosen from the class library or from home. Please encourage your child to choose books that are a little challenging for them to read. Comics and easy books are also great to read as they can improve comprehension skills and give ideas for story writing, but they will not stretch their vocabulary and reading ability. Please encourage your child to read with expression, and to express opinions about the characters in the story, the plot, and what might happen next. Reading books and reading record should be brought to school each day.

Maths

All pupils will be given login details for an online maths system called Professor Assessor. Numeracy homework assignments will be given for the children to complete on computers/tablets/devices at home. Each child will get an assignment unique to them, to practise skills that have been taught in the numeracy lessons. Children will also have a login for Times Tables Rock Stars, this is vital to practice their times tables to practice fluency and speed.

Water Bottles

Please ensure your child brings a named bottle to school every day, filled with water. The children are allowed to fill their water bottles up during the day if they run out. Please ensure water bottles are taken home regularly and washed.

Timetable of things to remember!

Please help your child to take responsibility themselves for the things that they need to remember.  Perhaps your child could cut out the timetable and place it somewhere at home or in their school bag to remind them each day.
