Dear Parents and Children,

I hope that you all had a lovely half-term break and are feeling refreshed and ready for another busy and exciting term in Year 6. We are very proud of how well the children have settled into Year 6 and the fantastic attitude they have shown towards their learning so far. We are looking forward to continuing this positive start as we move into Autumn Term 2.

Mrs Wood will continue to teach on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with Mrs Minty teaching on Mondays. Mrs Clermont remains our class Teaching Assistant, supporting the children in their learning throughout the week

 

Geography Topic

This term our topic is "River Avon and on and on…". We will be learning about rivers, including our local River Avon and River Severn, and comparing them with other rivers in Europe. We will investigate how rivers are formed, their features and their importance to people and the environment

 

English

Our class reading text this term is Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell. Through our reading lessons, the children will develop their comprehension, inference and discussion skills.

Our writing will be inspired by The Viewer. The children will have opportunities to write setting descriptions, letters, newspaper reports, diary entries and create their own ending to the story

Reading

Please continue to encourage your child to read regularly at home and record their reading in their reading record. Reading remains one of the most important ways to support learning across the curriculum. Children should bring their reading book and reading record to school each day. We encourage them to discuss what they are reading, make predictions and explain their opinions about characters and events.

 

Spellings

Weekly spellings will continue to be set on Google Classroom and tested on Thursdays. New spellings will be issued on Fridays. We encourage children to practise using the Look, Cover, Write, Check method to help secure spelling patterns and increase accuracy

 

Maths

This term we will be focusing on fractions, including equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions and using the four operations with fractions and decimals. Children should continue to access Professor Assessor and TT Rock Stars regularly to consolidate their learning and improve fluency

Science

Our science topic is Classifying Organisms. We will explore how living things are grouped according to their characteristics and learn about classification systems used by scientists.

Art and Design Technology

In DT, the children will be designing and creating bird boxes, applying measuring, design and construction skills.

PE

This term the children will take part in Quicksticks and Mini Muay Thai. Please continue to send your child to school in their PE kit on the designated PE day.

RE

In Religious Education, we will be learning about Prophecy and Promise, developing our understanding of how God’s promises are fulfilled and their significance within the Christian faith.

Music

The children will be preparing and practising songs for our Christmas performance, alongside developing their listening and appreciation skills through a range of musical activities

Home Learning

Home learning will continue to be set weekly on Google Classroom each Friday and should be completed by the following Thursday. Activities will include maths, spelling and reading tasks, along with occasional enrichment activities linked to our curriculum learning.

Water Bottles

Please ensure your child brings a named water bottle to school every day. Staying hydrated helps the children to concentrate and learn effectively throughout the day.

 

 

Dates for Your Diary

We are very excited to be sharing our Year 6 Class Assembly with you this term on Friday 20^th November. The children are welcome to dress up in clothes from the era if they would like to.
