Year 3

Welcome to Term 2 in Year 3!
We hope you have had an enjoyable and relaxing October Half Term break 😊
Important message: You are warmly invited to attend Year 3’s ‘Catch up and Cake’ on Monday 10th November from 2:30pm till 3:15pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to share in your child’s learning, look at their books with them and of course, eat cake!
This term in Geography we will be diving deeply into the wonderful country of Wales, with Mrs Courtney helping us to finding out what makes Wales so unique and special. This will link to a whole-school Geography Awareness Week in Week 3 (17th to 21st Nov) with all children making their own map, using compass directions and keys. We would love to see any interesting Welsh books, artefacts or resources you may have at home. Please do get in touch if you have an expertise and would like to share this with the class.
Our Swimming block is now completed for Year 3, it was wonderful to see all the children making great progress no matter what their starting point was. This term I will teach PE (Yoga) on a Wednesday and Mr Turnbull will teach Multi-ball skills on a Thursday.
Home Learning in Year 3
Home learning will continue to be set on Google classroom each week. Children will be given assignments in Maths, Spelling and reading with additional enrichment activities. Home learning will be set on Fridays on Google classroom and should be handed in the following Friday on Google Classroom or on paper if applicable. If your child is unable to access Google Classroom, please let us know so that we can provide them with a paper copy.
Spellings
A list of spellings for each week will be given out each Friday. Your child will be tested in class on the following Friday. The test will be done on the back of the new spelling sheet so you can see how they’ve done. We encourage children to learn spellings using the Look, Cover, Write, Check method, following the sequence:
LOOK at the word
COVER the word
WRITE the word
CHECK their spelling against the word.
Every child will be provided with a paper copy of their Spelling Look Cover Write Check sheet, this doubles up as Handwriting practice as well. Spelling sheets will also be uploaded to Google Classroom in case the sheet is lost.
Reading
Your child will continue to bring home a reading book every day to share with you. 'Free Reading’ books may be chosen from the class library or from home. Please encourage your child to choose books that are a little challenging for them to read. Comics and easy books are also great to read as they can improve comprehension skills and give ideas for story writing, but they will not stretch their vocabulary and reading ability. Please encourage your child to read with expression, and to express opinions about the characters in the story, the plot, and what might happen next. Use the VIPERS bookmark to help discuss books with your children. Reading books and reading record should be brought to school each day. Children receive house points for regular home reading.
Maths
All pupils have their login details for Professor Assessor. Some Numeracy homework assignments will be given for the children to complete on computers/tablets at home. Each child will get an assignment unique to them, to practise skills that have been taught in the numeracy lessons. In addition, the children will be able to use the ‘Times Tables Fun’ system on their Professor Assessor login.
Other Numeracy tasks may be given which do not require internet access.
Water Bottles
Please ensure your child brings a named bottle to school every day, filled with water. The children can fill their water bottles up during the day if they run out. Please ensure water bottles are taken home regularly and washed.
Timetable of things to remember!
Please help your child to take responsibility themselves for the things that they need to remember. Perhaps your child could cut out the timetable and place it somewhere at home or in their school bag to remind them each day.
