Year 3

Welcome to Term 3 in Year 3! Happy New Year to everyone, we hope you have had an enjoyable and relaxing break!
This term we will be exploring all things ancient in our exciting Stone Age history topic, beginning with a fascinating trip to Stonehenge itself!
Home Learning in Year 3:
Home learning will continue to be set on Google classroom each week. Children will be given assignments in maths, spellings and reading comprehension with additional enrichment activities. Home learning will be set on Fridays on Google Classroom and should be handed in the following Thursday on Google Classroom or to Mrs Oborne. If your child is unable to access Google Classroom, a paper copy will be sent home.
Spellings
A list of spellings each week will include blue ‘must-learn’ words, extra red ‘challenge’ words and sometimes purple ‘expert for experts’ words. We encourage challenge by choice, your child can choose to learn more challenging words if appropriate!
Your child will be tested in class on Friday and new spellings will be set. We encourage children to learn spellings using the Look, Cover, Write, Check method, following the sequence:
LOOK at the word
COVER the word
WRITE the word
CHECK their spelling against the word.
A spelling worksheet will come home on Fridays and will also be available on Google Classroom.
Your child will continue to bring home a reading book every day to share with you. 'Free Reading’ books may be chosen from the class library or from home. Please encourage your child to choose books that are a little challenging for them to read. Comics and easy books are great to read as they can improve comprehension skills and give ideas for story writing, but they will not stretch their vocabulary and reading ability. Please encourage your child to read with expression, and to express opinions about the characters in the story, the plot, and what might happen next. Please use your VIPERS bookmark when reading with your child, they have excellent questions to promote discussion and show understanding.
Reading books and reading record should be brought to school each day.
Maths
All pupils will be given login details for an online maths system called Professor Assessor. Numeracy homework assignments will be given for the children to complete on computers/tablets at home. Each child will get an assignment unique to them, to practise skills that have been taught in the numeracy lessons. In addition, the children will be able to use the ‘Times Tables Fun’ system on their Professor Assessor login.
We now all have individual log-ins for TT Rock Stars, an engaging and motivating online system for developing an instant recall of the times tables facts.
Water Bottles
Please ensure your child brings a named bottle to school every day, filled with water. The children are allowed to fill their water bottles up during the day if they run out. Please ensure water bottles are taken home regularly and washed.
Timetable of things to remember!
Please help your child to take responsibility themselves for the things that they need to remember. Perhaps your child could cut out the timetable and place it somewhere at home or in their school bag to remind them each day.
