Year 6

Welcome to Term 6 in Year 6

Term 6 is always a special one, and this year is no different. We are looking forward to our summer production of Shakespeare Rocks, which promises to be a brilliant celebration of the children’s creativity and confidence.

It is also an important transition term, as Year 6 begin preparing for secondary school. Alongside this, we will be celebrating the end of primary school with our Leavers’ Mass and Leavers’ Assembly, marking this milestone with pride and gratitude.

Don’t forget: Year 6 will be swimming on Wednesdays.

  • Whole class swimming for two weeks
  • Followed by four weeks of additional swimming for children who need more practice to confidently swim 25 metres

A busy, exciting, and memorable final term awaits

Geography Topic

In geography this term, we will be carrying out fieldwork to explore and understand our local environment, with a particular focus on Corsham. The children will develop their map skills by using OS maps, reading grid references, and identifying key human and physical features around the town.

English

In writing this term, we will be using The Highwayman as inspiration to create powerful, descriptive narratives. The children will explore how poets use imagery, rhythm, and emotion to build tension and atmosphere, before applying these techniques to their own work. They will experiment with figurative language such as metaphors and personification to bring characters and settings to life, crafting dramatic scenes inspired by the poem’s haunting storyline.

Home Learning In Year 6

Home learning will continue to be set on Google classroom each week. Children will be given assignments in maths and spellings. Home learning will be set on Fridays on Google classroom and should be handed in the following Thursday on Google Classroom. If your child is unable to access Google Classroom, please let us know so that we can provide them with a paper copy.

Spellings

Your child will be tested in class on Thursday with the words listed and new spellings will be set on Friday. We encourage children to learn spellings using the Look, Cover, Write, Check method, following the sequence:

LOOK at the word

COVER the word

WRITE the word

CHECK their spelling against the word.

Spellings will be set on Google Classroom. If your child is unable to access Google Classroom, please let us know so that we can provide them with a paper copy.

Reading

Your child will continue to bring home a reading book every day to share with you. 'Free Reading’ books may be chosen from the class library or from home. Please encourage your child to choose books that are a little challenging for them to read. Comics and easy books are also great to read as they can improve comprehension skills and give ideas for story writing, but they will not stretch their vocabulary and reading ability. Please encourage your child to read with expression, and to express opinions about the characters in the story, the plot, and what might happen next. Reading books and reading record should be brought to school each day.

Maths

All pupils have been given login details for an online maths system called Professor Assessor. Numeracy homework assignments will be given for the children to complete on computers/tablets at home. Each child will get an assignment unique to them, to practise skills that have been taught in the numeracy lessons. In addition, the children will be able to use the ‘Times Tables Fun’ system on their Professor Assessor login.

Water Bottles

Please ensure your child brings a named bottle to school every day, filled with water. The children are allowed to fill their water bottles up during the day if they run out. Please ensure water bottles are taken home regularly and washed.

Timetable of things to remember!

Please help your child to take responsibility themselves for the things that they need to remember.  Perhaps your child could cut out the timetable and place it somewhere at home or in their school bag to remind them each day.
